Makery: Creating Sustainable Art Practice Chapter 1
The bitesize Makery prompts will help you find your creative momentum to build your creatively sustainable art practice Another Way.
I recommend you read What Does Creative Sustainability Mean? post, which will introduce you to the context and concept of building a long-term, creatively sustainable art practice.
I like working with questions. I like asking questions regardless whether I have answers to them or not. Sometimes it’s enough to ask a question and allow time to formulate the answer. Markey is all about asking questions and getting up close to the creative process, inviting you to think about your art and creativity Another Way.
To kickstart the journey, I came up with a few questions, AKA wonderings (prompt is the more technical term):
How does your creative or art practice look like at this very point in time? Be very honest with yourself. As we are trying to make your practice creatively sustainable over a long period, honesty is vital. If your practice isn’t in the place you have imagined, admit that to yourself. I know it’s not easy, but in order to change you need to know where you stand and what needs shifting to implement change.
What are the disconnection points between how you see your practice and reality? (If there is none, just enjoy your practice and go on making art that didn’t exist before you created it into existence.)
What would need to happen for the vision of your creatively sustainable practice you hold deep down in your heart to materialise in real life?
What steps would you need to take to bring your vision to reality? Can you make a list of steps, tasks, habits, objectives, etc.? Can you start implementing the steps in your daily art/creative practice? If not, what is stopping you?
You don’t need to answer any of those questions. The idea behind asking questions is to get you into a habit of thinking about your art and creativity in terms of cultivating a creative practice, not only in terms of moving from one project to another. Building a creatively sustainable art practice comprises many elements, not only the physical activities that help to create the art or work on projects. It is indispensable to have time and space to think, learn about yourself and your creativity, and experience yourself within your creative space.
The bite-sized Makery prompts will help you find your creative momentum to build your creatively sustainable art practice. Another Way. A way that reflects your creative self while accommodating your current life circumstances.
